How to get to Ljubljana Castle
Great news is that Ljubljana castle is so easy to reach!
You can take the 70m-long funicular up for 2.20 euros (or 4 euros for both ways). It leaves from the Old Town not far from the market on Vodnikov trg. You can find it’s location here.
If you’re near Ljubljana TIC, grab a tourist train that departs every hour from Krek Square or take the bus no.32.
You can also take a short hike to the castle through Študentovska street, which runs south from Ciril Metodov Square, Reber Street from Old Square and Street na Grad from Upper Square. The castle is also reachable by bike.
What to do in Ljubljana Castle
We strongly suggest to start your exploration of Ljubljana castle with a nice cup of coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice in castle’s cafe and enjoy the views of the morning sky above the city.
You can walk around the castle grounds and enjoy the city views for free, but you’ll have to pay to enter some of the castle’s top sights or take part in a number of exciting experiences.
The 19th-century Viewing Tower offers the best view in the town. But, you have to walk 95 steps to get to the top. The special bonus is a 12-minute video tour of Ljubljana and its history just below the Viewing Tower.
The gothic Chapel of St George (Kapela Sv Jurija) is one of the oldest surviving remnants of the castle. It’s dating from 1489, but has been rebuilt in baroque style. You’ll love the frescoes and the coats of arms.
Make sure not to miss the Permanent Exhibition of Slovenian History and if you’re travelling with kids, they’ll love The Museum of Puppetry.

It’s completely free to stroll around the Ljubljana castle and in its courtyard. If you want to check out the museum or go inside the castle, you will need to pay an entrance fee.
Children younger than 7 years should be accompanied by their parents and can enter free of charge. Free entrance is also applicable for physically challenged people and accompanying persons with disabilities (except for guided tour). Guided tours for physically challenged people are also available.
